On this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) celebrates the International Labour Organization’s adoption of a safe and healthy work environment as a fundamental principle and right. As part of their celebration, IOSH has highlighted the Commonwealth’s growing commitment to developing good occupational safety and health (OSH), featuring OSH professionals from 10 Commonwealth countries, including Ghana.

Emily Esenam Akumah, an OSH professional from Ghana, has been recognized as a torchbearer in the OSH field. With a background in nursing, Akumah witnessed many work-related accidents and illnesses, which sparked her interest in preventing such suffering. Her passion for OSH led her to become involved in organizing the Vision Zero Ghana event, which brought together professionals and stakeholders from the global OSH community to discuss the future of Africa and OSH policy formulation. IOSH supported this event and has continued to collaborate with Akumah on various stakeholder engagements, training initiatives, and partnerships, extending to the sub-region.
